The usual October 31 deadline for state/county business privilege license renewal falls on a Saturday in 2026. Alabama Department of Revenue guidance extends the deadline to Monday, November 2, 2026. This post explains what the notice says, what it does not cover, and why other items on an owner’s calendar need their own dates.

Quick answer: Alabama Department of Revenue guidance extends the 2026 state/county business privilege license renewal deadline to Monday, November 2, because October 31 falls on a weekend. A renewal postmarked by November 2 is considered timely, regardless of when it is received. The notice addresses these licenses. It does not extend the deadline for a Business Privilege Tax return or establish a city license deadline.

When is the state/county business privilege license renewal due in 2026?

The Alabama Department of Revenue notice is titled “Business License Due Date Reminder.” It states that October 31, 2026 falls on a weekend and that the deadline to renew state/county business privilege licenses is therefore extended to November 2, 2026. October 31 is a Saturday, and November 2 is a Monday.

The notice also addresses mailed renewals. A renewal postmarked by November 2 is considered timely, regardless of the receipt date. If you plan to renew by mail, confirm the requirements and mailing address with the appropriate county licensing office, which administers the state/county license.

Here is a composite example, not a real business. A retail owner in Mobile County has always used October 31 as the renewal deadline. The office calendar has a reminder, but no one is assigned to handle it. When the owner checks the current notice, the deadline differs from the date on the calendar.

The date is only part of the issue. Someone still needs to complete the renewal. Checking the current source and assigning responsibility are habits that apply to other filings too. A date remembered from last year may not reflect this year’s guidance.

Why did the business privilege license date move from October 31?

The notice gives one reason: the weekend. The usual deadline falls on a Saturday, so the Department extended it to the following Monday.

For another license or filing, the deadline must be checked against that item’s own requirements. A notice about one renewal does not change every date on the business calendar.

Owners managing several filings may find it useful to record the source next to each deadline. That makes it easier to distinguish a date that changed from one that did not. It also gives a new employee or outside advisor somewhere to start when a question arises.

Is the business privilege license the same as the Business Privilege Tax return?

No. The license renewal and the Business Privilege Tax return are separate requirements. The November 2 notice addresses state/county business privilege licenses, not the tax return.

If your business must file a Business Privilege Tax return, confirm the applicable filing requirements and deadline with the Alabama Department of Revenue or your tax professional. Do not substitute the license renewal date simply because the names sound similar.

It helps to use the full name of each requirement on your calendar. An entry labeled only “business privilege” can leave the person handling it unsure whether it refers to a license or a tax return.

Does the November 2 date apply to a city business license?

The notice covers state/county business privilege licenses. It does not establish a renewal deadline for a city license. ADOR also states that it does not administer municipal licenses. Check with the city’s licensing office for its requirements and current deadline.

If your business holds more than one type of license, give each a separate calendar entry. Include the issuing office, the deadline, and the person responsible. That helps prevent a notice about one license from being mistaken for an extension of another.

What changed for credit card fees on September 1, 2026?

Beginning September 1, 2026, ADOR says a qualifying credit card transaction fee is not subject to sales or use tax if it is separate and identifiable from other charges. Businesses charging these fees should check that their point-of-sale, invoice, and recordkeeping practices distinguish the fee from the underlying sale.

The legislation originated as SB221 in the 2026 Regular Session. ADOR defines a credit card transaction fee as a fee assessed on purchases made by debit or credit card to offset interchange fees charged to a merchant or seller. A charge’s label alone should not replace a review of whether it meets that definition and the separate-and-identifiable condition.

Ask your accountant or tax advisor how the change applies to your receipts and invoices. For more on Alabama tax changes this fall, see Alabama Business Tax Changes Every Small Business Should Double-Check This Fall.

This is a separate tax change, not part of the license renewal extension. Each deserves its own review.

What should a business owner check before November 2?

Start with the licenses and filings your business is responsible for. Record each item’s full name, the agency or office that handles it, and the source supporting its deadline. If the only source is someone’s memory of last year, treat the date as needing confirmation. For the state/county business privilege license renewal, use ADOR’s current notice.

Next, identify who owns each item. A date without an assigned person can pass unnoticed, whether or not the deadline moved. In the composite example above, the reminder existed, but no one was responsible for completing the renewal.

Then confirm how to submit the renewal to the appropriate county licensing office. The notice’s postmark rule matters if you are mailing it. If you use another submission method, confirm the office’s instructions rather than assuming the mailing rule answers every timing question.

Also review the point-of-sale and invoice settings for any card transaction fees you charge. The September 1 tax change depends on the qualifying fee being separate and identifiable from other charges.

Finally, schedule a regular review of the calendar. Keep the supporting notice, instructions, or statute citation with each entry so the next person can see where the deadline came from. Save submission confirmations or other evidence that the item was completed.

If you are unsure whether a requirement belongs on the list, ask the relevant licensing office, accountant, or attorney. The goal is a calendar your team can act on, not simply a collection of dates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the state/county business privilege license renewal deadline in 2026?

According to Alabama Department of Revenue guidance, the deadline is Monday, November 2, 2026, because October 31 falls on a weekend. A renewal postmarked by November 2 is considered timely, regardless of the receipt date. Confirm the submission requirements with your county licensing office.

Does the extension apply to the Business Privilege Tax return?

The notice does not extend the Business Privilege Tax return deadline. It addresses state/county business privilege license renewals. Confirm any applicable tax-return deadline with the Alabama Department of Revenue or your tax professional.

Does the extension apply to a city license?

The notice does not establish a city license deadline. Check with your city’s licensing office. If your business holds both state/county and municipal licenses, track them separately.

Does Alabama tax a credit card transaction fee?

Beginning September 1, 2026, ADOR says a qualifying credit card transaction fee is not subject to sales or use tax if it is separate and identifiable from other charges. ADOR defines the fee as one assessed on debit or credit card purchases to offset interchange fees charged to a merchant or seller. Ask your tax advisor how those requirements apply to your business’s receipts and invoices.

A moved deadline is a useful reason to review the whole calendar. The state/county business privilege license renewal is one requirement among several, and each needs its own date, source, and responsible person. Keeping those details together helps your team complete the work without relying on memory.
